Rif Yomi Video Edition -- Beitza Daf 26 - 27 (runtime 14:07)

Runtime 14 min 7 secs

14a
Mishna:

If a bechor {firstborn animal} fell into a pit:
{Note: a bechor which has no permanent blemish is muktzeh because it cannot be slaughtered on Yom Tov.}
Rabbi Yehuda says: An expert {checker of blemishes} should descend and see
{Beitza 26a}
-- if it has a blemish, they should lift it out and slaughter it, and if not, they should not slaughter.
Rabbi Shimon says: All whose blemish was not visible while it was yet day {on erev Yom Tov} is not considered prepared {muchan}.

Gemara:
In what do they argue? In whether we inspect for blemishes on Yom Tov is the point of their dispute.
Rabbi Yehuda held that we inspect for blemishes on Yom Tov.
And Rabbi Shimon held that we do not inspect for blemishes on Yom Tov.
And even though {in general} we establish that {in case of dispute between} Rabbi Yehuda and Rabbi Shimon, the halacha is like Rabbi Yehuda, in this we establish like Rabbi Shimon.

{Beitza 27a}
For we say: Ami the Verdanaite inspected bechors {for blemishes} for the Nasi's house.
He thought not to inspect on Yom Tov.
They came and told this to Rabbi Ami.
He said to them: He does well that he does not inspect.

Is this so? But Rabbi Ami himself would inspect {on Yom Tov}!
Rabbi Ami would inspect the previous day,
{Beitza 27b}
and on Yom Tov he would ask {the owner} how the blemish occurred. {For if it were deliberately inflicted, the Kohen would be banned from eating it}.

Just like the man who brought a bechor before Rava in the afternood erev Yom Tov
And Rava was sitting and scrubbing his head.
He lifted his eyes and looked at the blemish.
He said to him: Go now and come back tomorrow.
The next day, he came before him {Rava}.
He {Rava} said: Tell me the substance of the incident {in which the blemish was caused}, how it was.
He said to him {Rava}: We were placing barley behind a thorn fence, and it entered its head {through the thorn fence} and split its lip.
He {Rava} said to him: And perhaps you caused it?
He said to him: No.

The implication of this is that causing it is forbidden. And how do we know that causing it is forbidden?
Abaye said: Because we learnt {in a brayta}:
{Vayikra 22:21}:
21 And whosoever bringeth a sacrifice of peace-offerings unto the LORD in fulfilment of a vow clearly uttered, or for a freewill-offering, of the herd or of the flock, it shall be perfect to be accepted; there shall be no blemish therein.
{thus implying that one should take care that there is no blemish on it.}
This only tells me that there should be no blemished caused by hand {directly}. How do I know that one should not cause it to occur via something else -- that he should not bring dough or pressed figs and place it in the goat's eat such that the dog comes and takes it {and blemishes the goat's ear}?
Therefore it teaches kol mum - any blemish. It said mum {and that was enough} and it said kol mum {to teach that one should not cause any blemish, even indirectly}.

Mishna:
An animal which died, one should not move it from its place.
There was an incident in which they came and asked Rabbi Tarfon about it, and about challah which had become ritually impure, and he entered the study hall and inquired. And they told him: They should not be moved from their place.

Gemara:
Ze'iri "translated" this as referring to a sanctified animal which was dangerously ill from erev Yom Tov.
The reason {one could not move it} is that is was a sanctified animal, such that we may not feed it to dogs.
However, profane {=non-sanctified} would be permitted to move, for since it was dangerously ill from erev Yom Tov, his mind was upon it since yesterday to feed it to dogs, and therefore it is permitted to move it.
We may indeed derive this via careful analysis of the Mishna. For it teaches, "there was an incident, and they asked Rabbi Tarfon about it and about challah which had become ritually impure." That is to say, the animal that had died was comparable to the challah which became ritually impure, in that it was not fit for anything.
We so deduce.

Mishna:

We are not counted initially for {towards participating in purchasing} an animal on Yom Tov, but we may be counted from erev Yom Tov, and slaughter and divide between them {on Yom Tov}.

{Beitza 28a}
Rabbi Yehuda said: One may weigh meat against a vessel or against a cleaver.
And the Sages say: We may not use a scale at all.

{Beitza 27b}
Gemara:

What is meant by "we may not be counted?"
Rav Yehuda cited Shmuel: We do not initially fix a price for an animal on Yom Tov.
Rather, how should one conduct himself?
Rava said: He should bring two animals and set up one opposite the other and say "this is like that {in value}."
A brayta also says to: A man should not say to his friend {on Yom Tov}: Behold I am with you for a selah's worth, I am with you for two {selahs}, but rather should say to him: behold I am with you for half, a third, or a quarter{of the animal}.
