Rif Yomi Video Edition -- Beitza Daf 15 (runtime 25 min)

Runtime: 25 minutes

{Beitza 15a}
Rather, with stiff {material}, just at that which Rav Huna son of Rav Yehoshua said: This hard felt of Narash {a place} is permitted {to sit upon}.

Undershoes {placed under the shoes, with goat leather underneath that level} and coin bags of zuzim and of seeds have no issue of shaatnez because this is not the way of warming {to place the bags on one's lap or the undershoes under one's shoes}.

We learn in Niddah {61b}:
The Sages learnt {in a brayta}: A garment in which shaatnez was lost, one should not sell it to a gentile {for the gentile might turn around and sell it to a Jew} nor should one make it into a saddle for a donkey, but one may make of it burial shrouds for a corpse.

Rafram bar Papa cited Rav Chisda: A garment in which shaatnez was lost, he should dye it and it is permitted. For wool and linen, dye does not enter them at the same rate, and since you don't know, we may say they fell out {since during dyeing he does not see them distinctly, we may assume this}.

Rav Acha cited Mar Zutra {our gemara: Rav Acha bar Rav Yeva cited Mar Zutra}: One who lost a thread of linen in a woolen garment and pulls it out {that is, he inserted several threads and pulled several out} and does not know if it fell out or did not fall out, it is fine.
What is the reason?
Biblically, the All Merciful stated shaatnez -- until it was combed {שוע}, spun {טווי}, and woven {ונוז}. And it was that Sages who decreed on it {in cases where it is not all three}, and in this instance, since he removed some, we may assume it was removed.
Rav Ashi objected to this: And say it is {Biblically shaatnez} if it is combed or spun or woven {rather than all three}.

And the halacha is like Mar Zutra since the All Merciful stated it in a single word.

"This is the general rule: Anything which we use, on Yom Tov we may send it.":

Rav Sheshet permitted the Sages to send tefillin on Yom Tov.
Abaye said to him: But we learn {in the Mishna}: Anything that may be used on Yom Tov, we send it.
He {=Rav Sheshet} said to him: This is what is means to say: This is the general rule: Anything which we can use on a weekday, we send it on Yom Tov.

BEGIN PEREK TWO

{Beitza 15b}
Mishna:

Yom Tov which occurred on erev Shabbat, one should not begin cooking from {/on} Yom Tov for Shabbat; however, he may cook {on Yom Tov} for Yom Tov and if he left over, he left over for Shabbat.

{Alternatively,} He may make a meal from erev Yom Tov {for Shabbat} and rely upon it for Shabbat {and thus when he continue cooking on Yom Tov for Shabbat, for now he is not beginning to cook but is merely continuing}.

Bet Shammai say: Two cooked foods.
And Bet Hillel say: One cooked food.

And they {=Bet Shammai} admit that a fish and the egg {smeared} upon it that they are {=count as} two cooked foods.

If he ate it {on Yom Tov} or lost it, he should not cook {=relying} upon it {to continue cooking on Yom Tov for Shabbat}.

If he left over from it any amount, he may rely upon it for Shabbat.

Gemara
:

From where do we know this {that one may not cook initially for Shabbat on Yom Tov unless one utilizes the eruv tavshilin?
Shmuel said: Because the Scriptures stated {Shemot 20:7}:
7 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
Remember it from another day {Yom Tov} that comes to cause it to be forgotten.
{This is an asmachta since this is a Rabbinic institution.}

What is the reason?
Rava said: So that he sets aside a nice portion for Shabbat and a nice portion for Yom Tov.
Rav Ashi said: So that they {the people} will say: One may not bake from Yom Tov for Shabbat. All the more so {then} from Yom Tov to a weekday!

They learnt {in a brayta}: Rabbi Eliezer says: On Yom Tov, one should either only eat and drink, or else sit and learn. Rabbi Yehoshua says: Split it. Half for eating and drinking and half for the study hall.

Rabbi Yochanan said: And both of them deduced it from the same source.
One verse says {Devarim 16:8}:
8 Six days thou shalt eat unleavened bread; and on the seventh day shall be a solemn assembly to the LORD thy God; thou shalt do no work therein.
and another verse states {Bemidbar 29:35}:

לה בַּיּוֹם, הַשְּׁמִינִי--עֲצֶרֶת, תִּהְיֶה לָכֶם: כָּל-מְלֶאכֶת עֲבֹדָה, לֹא תַעֲשׂוּ. 35 On the eighth day ye shall have a solemn assembly: ye shall do no manner of servile work;
How so? {Is it for Hashem or is it for yourselves?} Rabbi Eliezer maintains that it is {a choice} - either all for Hashem or all for yourselves.
And Rabbi Yehoshua maintains that one should split it: half of it to Hashem and half of itfor yourselves.

We learn in Pesachim in Perek Eli Devarim {Pesachim 68b}:
Rabbi Eleazar said: All agree regarding Shavuot that we also require lachem {=for yourselves} for it is the day that the Torah was given to Israel.
Rava said: All agree regarding Shabbat that we also require lachem for it is written {Yeshaya 58:13}:

יג אִם-תָּשִׁיב מִשַּׁבָּת רַגְלֶךָ, עֲשׂוֹת חֲפָצֶךָ בְּיוֹם קָדְשִׁי; וְקָרָאתָ לַשַּׁבָּת עֹנֶג, לִקְדוֹשׁ יְהוָה מְכֻבָּד, וְכִבַּדְתּוֹ מֵעֲשׂוֹת דְּרָכֶיךָ, מִמְּצוֹא חֶפְצְךָ וְדַבֵּר דָּבָר. 13 If thou turn away thy foot because of the sabbath, from pursuing thy business on My holy day; and call the , and the holy of the LORD honourable; and shalt honour it, not doing thy wonted ways, nor pursuing thy business, nor speaking thereof;
Rav Yosef said: All agree regarding Purim that we also require lachem, for initially, it was instituted for that.
{Esther 9:22:

22 the days wherein the Jews had rest from their enemies, and the month which was turned unto them from sorrow to gladness, and from mourning into a good day; that they should make them days of feasting and gladness, and of sending portions one to another, and gifts to the poor.
}

יְמֵי מִשְׁתֶּה וְשִׂמְחָה - "days of feasting and gladness" is written by it.

Mar the son of Ravina was sitting at all times in fast except for the day of Shavuot, Purim, and erev Yom Kippur.
For Rabbi Chiyya of Difti taught {a brayta}:
{Vayikra 23:32}

לב שַׁבַּת שַׁבָּתוֹן הוּא לָכֶם, וְעִנִּיתֶם אֶת-נַפְשֹׁתֵיכֶם; בְּתִשְׁעָה לַחֹדֶשׁ, בָּעֶרֶב--מֵעֶרֶב עַד-עֶרֶב, תִּשְׁבְּתוּ שַׁבַּתְּכֶם. {פ} 32 It shall be unto you a sabbath of solemn rest, and ye shall afflict your souls; in the ninth day of the month at even, from even unto even, shall ye keep your sabbath. {P}
Now on the 9th do we fast? Do we not fast on the tenth {as we state in other places, including earlier in this perek in Vayikra}?
Rather this is to tell you that anyone who eats and drinks on the ninth, the Scriptures considers it as if he fasted on the ninth and the tenth.

{Beitza 15b}

10 Then he said unto them: 'Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto him for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy unto our Lord; neither be ye grieved; for the joy of the LORD is your strength.'
What does it mean "unto him for whom nothing is prepared?"
Rav Chisda said: Send portions to he who did not have the ability to set up an eruv tavshilin. But he who had opportunity to set it up and did not is simply negligent.

What is meant by {Nechemia 8:10}:
10 Then he said unto them: 'Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto him for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy unto our Lord; neither be ye grieved; for the joy of the LORD is your strength.'
Rabbi Yochanan cited Rabbi Eleazar beRabbi Shimon: Hashem said to Israel: My sons, borrow on my account and sanctify the day, and trust in Me, and I will repay.
