Rif Beitza 18b {Beitza 33a continues; 33b}

18b

{Beitza 33a continues}

A brayta also says so: We do not support the pot with a piece of wood, and so too the door, for wood was only given over for kindling.

"And we do not direct an animal with a staff on Yom Tov" because he then appears like someone going to the market.

Chizra:
Rav Nachman forbids and Rav Sheshet permits.
To explain: Wood from a type of thorn{bush}, and it is called chizra -- Rav Nachman forbids one to take from them a stick to enter into meat, like a spit, in order to roast the roast. And Rav Sheshet permits.

With a moist one, all agree that it is forbidden, for it is like muktzeh.
Where do they argue? By a dry one. He who forbids will tell you that wood was only given for kindling.
And he who permits will tell you that why does it matter to me whether to roast with it or with its coal?
And the halacha is that a dry one it is permitted and with a moist one it is forbidden.

Rava expounded: A woman should not enter the woodhouse to take a poker {to stir the coals}, and a poker which broke is forbidden to use it for kindling on Yom Tov, for we kindle with vessels but do not kindle with shards of vessels.

Mishna:
Rabbi Eliezer says: One may take a sliver {of wood} from before him in order to pick his teetch, and gather {slivers of wood} from the courtyard and light them, for all that it in the courtyard is prepared.
And the Sages say: He may take a sliver from before him {in the house} and light.

{Beitza 33b}
Gemara:
They learnt {in a brayta}: One may take a sliver before him {in his house} to pick his teeth. And the Sages say: He may not take expect from the trough of an animal. And they are alike in that he should clip off {a sliver}. If he did clip it in order to pick his teeth or to open the door, inadvertantly on Shabbat he is liable to a sin offering; deliberately on Yom Tov, he absorbs the forty {lashes}; these are the words of Rabbi Eliezer. And the Sages say: Both on Shabbat and Yom Tov are only because of Rabbinically injunction{shevut}.
