Rif Beitza 19b {Beitza 34a continues; 35b - 36a}

19b

{Beitza 34a continues}

The Sages learnt {in a brayta}: We may scald the head and legs {of an animal} and singe it with flame, but we may not cover them with sid {lime} nor with charsis {a type of lime} nor with earth.
And we may not shear them with scissors, nor may we trim the vegetable with its scissors, but we may prepare kondas and achabiyot {even though their preparation involves a lot of work}.
And we may kindle and bake in a furnace.
And we may hear water in an antichi {in which water is kept for a long time}.
And we may not back in a new furnace as a decree lest it crack. {and the person's exertion on Yom Tov will have been in vain}

The Sages learnt {in a brayta}:
We may not fan {a flame} with a bellows on Yom Tov, but we may fan with a tube.
And we may not fix a spit, nor may we sharpen it.

The Sages learnt {in a brayta}:
We may not crack a reed in order to roast a salted fish, but we may crack a nut with a cloth {by putting it in the cloth and banging it} and we do not worry that it will rip.

{Beitza 35b}
Mishna:
{If fruits were placed on a roof and now people fear that it will rain}
They may lower fruits via a skylight on Yom Tov but not on Shabbat.
And we may cover the fruits with keilim {vessels/clothing} because of the dripping water.
And so too pitchers of wine and pitchers of water.
And we may place a kli {vessel} under the dripping water on Shabbat.

{Beitza 36a}
Gemara:

"They may lower fruits via a skylight."
Rav Nachman said: They only learnt this regarding the same roof, but from roof to roof, no.

A tanna taught: He may not remove it from one roof to another, even if their roofs are on the same level.
A tanna taught: He should not lower them with a rope through windows, nor should he lower them via ladders.

"And they may cover the fruits...":
Ulla said: Even rows of bricks {may be covered}.
And Rabbi Yitzchak said: Fruits which are suitable {to be used on Yom Tov}.
And Rabbi Yitzchak is consistent in his opinion, for Rabbi Yitchak said: A vessel may not be moved except for the needs of something which may be moved on Shabbat.
And we have already explained in masechet Shabbat that the halacha is not like Rabbi Yitzchak.
