על מנת שאדבר עליך לשלטון ואעשה עמך כפועל דבר עליה לשלטון ועשה עמה כפועל מקודשת ואם לאו אינה מקודשת:

"On condition that I speak on your behalf to the ruler," or "that I will conduct myself with you like a laborer," if he speaks on her behalf to the ruler, and if he conducts himself with her like a laborer {works for her}, she is betrothed, and if not, she is not betrothed,

Gemara:

אמר ריש לקיש והוא שנתן לה שוה פרוטה משלו אבל בשכר לא
ובשכר מאי טעמא לא משום דישנה לשכירות מתחילה ועד סוף והויא לה כמלוה והמקדש במלוה אינה מקודשת:

Resh Lakish said: And this was where he gave to her {in addition to his working, to fulfill the condition} the value of a perutah of his own, but for the wages, no.
And for the wages, for what reason not? Because wages exist {accruing} from the beginning {of the job} until the end, and so it is like a loan, and one who betroths with a loan, she is not betrothed.

Mishna:

על מנת שירצה אבא רצה האב מקודשת ואם לאו אינה מקודשת
מת האב הרי זו מקודשת מת הבן מלמדין האב שיאמר לא רציתי

On condition that {his} father wants, if the father wants, she is betrothed, and if not she is not betrothed.
If the father dies, she is betrothed. If the son {=the groom} dies, we direct the father to say "I do not want."
