Mishna:

האומר לחברו צא וקדש לי אשה פלונית והלך וקדשה לעצמו מקודשת לשני
וכן האומר לאשה הרי את מקודשת לי לאחר שלשים יום ובא אחר וקדשה בתוך שלשים יום מקודשת לשני
בת ישראל לכהן תאכל בתרומה
מעכשיו ולאחר שלשים יום ובא אחר וקדשה בתוך שלשים יום מקודשת ואינה מקודשת
בת ישראל לכהן ובת כהן לישראל לא תאכל בתרומה

If one says to his friend, "go and betroth for me the woman Plonit," and he {=the agent} went and betrothed her for himself, she is betrothed to the second {that is, the agent}.
And so too if one says to a woman, "behold, you are betrothed to me after 30 days," and another person comes and betroths her within the 30 days, she is betrothed to the second one {who came in the intervening period}.
The daughter of an Israelite to a kohen {=the second one} may eat of terumah.

"From now, and after 30 days," and another person comes and betroths her within the thirty days, she is betrothed and not betrothed.
The daughter of an Israelite to a kohen {=the second one}, and the daughter of a kohen to an Israelite, may not eat of terumah.

Gemara:

תנא מה שעשה עשוי אלא שנהג בו מנהג הרמאין

A tanna taught: That which was done was done, but he conducted himself in this in the manner of swindlers.

רבין חסידא אזל לקדושי אתתא לבריה וקדשה לנפשיה
והתניא מה שעשה עשוי אלא שנהג בו מנהג רמאין לדידיה

Ravin Chasida went to betroth a woman for his son, and betrothed her for himself.
But they learnt {in a brayta}: That which was done was done, but but he conducted himself in this in the manner of swindlers?!
