Rif Moed Katan 6b {Moed Katan 12b; 13a; Pesachim 55b}

6b

{Moed Katan 12b}
Mishna:

Gemara:
One may gather in his fruits because of thieves and remove his flax from the soak in order that it not be lost {ruined}, so long as he does not direct events such that his labor will be done on chol haMoed {but just if it happens to be so, it is allowed}, and in all cases, if they so direct their labor on chol haMoed, it should be lost.

A tanna taught: so long as he gathers them in discreetly to his house.

Rav Yosef had a certain pile of beams. He brought them in in the day.
Abaye said to him: But we learnt {in a brayta}: so long as he gathers them in discreetly within his house.
He {=Rav Yosef} said to him: The discreet conduct for these is in the day, for since in the night we need more men and need bonfires, it would have highlighted the matter.

{Moed Katan 13a}

"So long as he does not {deliberately} direct his work such that he ends up doing it on chol haMoed":
Rabbi Yirmiya inquired of Rabbi Zera: If he directs his work to be on chol haMoed and he dies, shall we fine his sons after him {and not let them perform the work}? If you find to say that if one disfigures the ear of a firstborn {animal} and then he {the one who did the disfiguring} died, they fine his sons after him, this is because it is a Biblical prohibition. And if you find to say that one who sells his servant to gentile and he {the seller} dies, they fine his sons after him, this is because every day he was taken away from performance of mitzvot. Here, what? Do the Sages fine the man himself, and he is no more, or do the Sages fine the money, and it is extant?
And we resolve: To him the Sages fined, while to his son they did not fine. And so too one who disfigures the ear of a firstborn {animal} and then dies, and one who sells his servant to a gentile and then dies, the Sages did not fine his sons after him.
And so do we resolve each of these in each place.
And so is the halacha.

Mishna:

They may not buy houses, servants, stones, nor animals, except for the purpose of the Moed, or for the needs of the seller who does not have what to eat.
One may not empty out one house into another house, but one may empty it into his courtyard.
And they do not bring back vessels from the house of the craftsman, and if he is worried about them, he may remove them to another courtyard.

Gemara:

Rava inquired from Rav Nachman: The wages of labor who does not have what to eat, what {is the law}?
That is to say: May one hire a laborer to perform some work which is not for the purpose of the Moed in order that the laborer take wish wages, so that he will have what to eat?
And we conclude that the wages of labor who does not have what to eat is permitted.

"And may not empty out one house into another house, but one may empty it into his courtyard":
{implying that he may bring from a house in another courtyard into his courtyard}
But the beginning stated that one may not empty at all {from one house to another}?
Abaye said: The end means that one may bring it to a house in the courtyard.
{and thus he may bring it from his house which is in the courtyard into his courtyard}

We learn in perek Makom sheNahagu {the fourth perek of Pesachim, on Pesachim 55b}:
The Sages learnt {in a brayta}: Fertilizer in a courtyard, they move it to the sides. In a barn and in a courtyard, they take it out to the garbage dump.
There is an internal contradiction You said that {by a courtyard} they move it to the sides, and then it returns and teaches that they move it to the dump.
And Rava answers: This is what is means to say: And if the courtyard becomes like a barn for cows, they take it out to the dump.
And so is the halacha.
