Rif Bava Kamma 30a {82a - 84a}

30a

{Bava Kamma 82a}

that a woman must comb her hair before performing immersion; that pedlars [selling spicery] be allowed to travel about in the towns. And he instituted immersion for those who experienced a seminal emission.

'That the law be read [publicly] in the Minchah service on Sabbath:' on account of shopkeepers.

'That the law be read [publicly] on Mondays and Thursdays.'
For initially, it was ordained that one man should each read three verses.
For they learnt {tnan}: {Shemot 15:22}:
22 And Moses led Israel onward from the Red Sea, and they went out into the wilderness of Shur; and they went three days in the wilderness, and found no water.
Those who interpret verses metaphorically say: water means nothing but Torah, for it is stated {Yeshaya 55:1}:
1 Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye for water, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.
As they went three days without Torah, they prophets among them thereupon rose and enacted that they should publicly read the law on Sabbath, make a break on Sunday, read again on Monday, make a break again on Tuesday and Wednesday, read again on Thursday and then make a break on Friday so that they should not be kept for three days without Torah.

And Ezra instituted three men reading ten verses, corresponding to ten batlanim {of leisure for the purpose of attending to public duties}.

'That Courts be held on Mondays and Thursdays' — for they {=people are about}, as they come to read the Scroll of the Law.

'That clothes be washed on Thursdays' — for the honor of Shabbat.

'That garlic be eaten on Fridays' -- because of marital relations. For it is written {Tehillim 1:3}:
3 And he shall be like a tree planted by streams of water, {N}
that bringeth forth its fruit in its season, and whose leaf doth not wither; and in whatsoever he doeth he shall prosper.
And Rav Yehuda said: This is one who engages in marital relations from each Friday night.

'That a housewife rise early to bake bread' -- so that there should be bread for the poor.
'That a woman must wear a sinnar' — out of modesty.
{Bava Kamma 82b}
'That peddlers selling spicery be allowed to travel about in the towns' — for the purpose of providing toilet articles for the women so that they should not be repulsive in the eyes of their husbands.

{Bava Kamma 83a}
"NO MAN SHOULD BREED A DOG UNLESS IT IS ON A CHAIN":
He may, however, breed it in a town adjoining the frontier where he should keep it chained during the daytime and loose it only at night.

Mishna:
ONE WHO INJURES A FELLOW MAN BECOMES LIABLE TO HIM FOR FIVE ITEMS: FOR DEPRECIATION, FOR PAIN, FOR HEALING, FOR LOSS OF TIME AND FOR DEGRADATION.
HOW IS IT WITH 'DEPRECIATION'? IF HE PUT OUT HIS EYE, CUT OFF HIS ARM OR BROKE HIS LEG, THE INJURED PERSON IS CONSIDERED AS IF HE WERE A SLAVE BEING SOLD IN THE MARKET PLACE, AND A VALUATION IS MADE AS TO HOW MUCH HE WAS WORTH [PREVIOUSLY], AND HOW MUCH HE IS WORTH [NOW].
'PAIN' — IF HE BURNT HIM EITHER WITH A SPIT OR WITH A NAIL, EVEN THOUGH ON HIS [FINGER] NAIL WHICH IS A PLACE WHERE NO BRUISE COULD BE MADE, IT HAS TO BE CALCULATED HOW MUCH A MAN OF EQUAL STANDING WOULD REQUIRE TO BE PAID TO UNDERGO SUCH PAIN.
'HEALING' — IF HE HAS STRUCK HIM, HE IS UNDER OBLIGATION TO PAY MEDICAL EXPENSES. SHOULD ULCERS [MEANWHILE] ARISE ON HIS BODY, IF AS A RESULT OF THE WOUND, THE OFFENDER WOULD BE LIABLE, BUT IF NOT AS A RESULT OF THE WOUND, HE WOULD BE EXEMPT. WHERE THE WOUND WAS HEALED BUT REOPENED, HEALED AGAIN BUT REOPENED, HE WOULD STILL BE UNDER OBLIGATION TO HEAL HIM. IF, HOWEVER, IT HAD COMPLETELY HEALED [BUT HAD SUBSEQUENTLY REOPENED] HE WOULD NO MORE BE UNDER OBLIGATION TO HEAL HIM.

Yerushalmi {34a}:
They taught {tnei}: If one injures his fellow five {of the aforementioned categories}, he gives him five; four, he gives him four; three, he gives him three; two, he gives him two; one, he gives him one.
And how so? If he hit him on his hand and cut it off, he gives him five: depreciation, pain, healing, loss of time, and degradation.
If he hit him on his hand and it swells, he gives him four: pain, healing, loss of time, and degradation.
If he hit him on the head and it swells, he gives him three: pain, healing, and degradation.
If he hit him on some place which is not visible, he gives him two: pain and healing.
If he hit him with a bundle of documents in his hand, he gives him one: degradation.

Gemara:
There was a certain ox which chewed on the hand of a child. It came before Rava. He said to them: Go and assess him like a slave. The Sages said to him: But it is Master {=Rava} who says that payment for which the injured party would have to be valued as if he were a slave cannot be collected in Bavel? He said to them: The practical implication is if he seized it.
Rava is consistent in his position, for Rava said: Payment for damage done to oxen by oxen, and damages to man by oxen may be collected in Bavel. Now, damages of man to man
