Rif Megillah 6b {Megillah 19a continues; 19b - 20a}

6b

{Megillah 19a continues}

"From where does one read the megillah and thus fulfill his obligation?
Rabbi Meir says: All of it.
Rabbi Yehuda says: From "Ish Yehudi" {Esther 2:5}. {the introduction of Mordechai}
Rabbi Yossi says: From "Achar haDevarim HaEleh" {Esther 3:1}. {Haman's rise to power}":
Rabbi Chelbo cited Rav Chama bar Guria who cited Rav: The halacha is like the words of the one who says "all of it." And even according to the opinion that it is from "Ish Yehuda," still all of it needs to be written.

Rabbi Chelbo cited Rav Chama bar Gurian who cited Rav: A megilla is called a sefer and it is called a letter. It is called a sefer, that if it is sewn with flax threads it is invalid, and it is called a letter, that if it has three stitches of sinew it is valid {unlike by a sefer}, two at the ends of the sheet and one within the sheet.
Rav Nachman said: And so long as every sinew is triply-stitched.

{Megillah 19b}

Rabbi Yochanan said: If one reads a megillah written amongst Ketuvim does not fulfill.
Others repudiated him, saying: "They did not say he did not fulfill except for a public reading {with the congregation}, but for a private one he fulfilled."
Rava said: And in a public one also, they did not say this except where it is not a bit smaller or a bit larger than the other parchments, but if it is a bit smaller or a bit larger than the other parchments, since it looks like a megillah in and of itself, even in public he also fulfilled.
And Rabbi Yochanan said:The leaving over when stitching that they leave off on the top and the bottom of the parchment is a halacha leMoshe miSinai, and they repudiated him, saying that they only said this so that it does not rip.

{Megillah 20a}
Mishna:

All are valid to read the megillah except for a deaf-mute {at least that it how it is usually translated}, a lunatic, and a minor.
And Rabbi Yehuda validates by a minor.

They only read the megillah {during the day reading} by day. They do not circumcise, immerse, or sprinkle, and so too a woman watching one day against a day {by niddah} should not immerse until sunrise. And all of them which were done from daybreak {before sunrise} it is valid.
