Rif Megillah 5a {Megillah 18a continues; 17a; 18a; 18b; Yerushalmi; 18b}

5a

{Megillah 18a continues}

"And the foreign speaker who heard it in Hebrew fulfilled":
And even though he does not know what they are saying, just as is true by women, who even though they do not understand what is being said, even so they fulfill their obligation, for there is the commandment of reading and promulgating the miracle.

{Megillah 17a}
Mishna:

If he read it intermittently {with pauses in the middle}, and dozing, he fulfilled.
If he wrote it and while doing so corrected it or expounded it, if he directed his heart {which in other contexts means either to intend to fulfill or to direct his attention to pronounce it appropriately} he fulfilled and if not he did not fulfill.

{Megillah 18a}
Gemara
:

What is meant by "intermittently?"
Making pauses, such that he reads a bit and waits, and resumes reading a bit and waits, until he reads it all - he fulfilled.

{Megillah 18b}
The Sages learnt {in a brayta}: If he read it intermittently - סירוגין - he fulfilled. Out of order - סירוסין - he did not fulfill.

Yerushalmi:
סירוגין means cuts {short bursts}; סירוסין means he reads one and skips one. To explain, he reads one and omits one, such that he reads the first verse and skips the second, and reads the third verse, and returns to read the second verse which he had skipped -- in such an instance, he did not fulfill, for it is "out of order."

Bavli:
{Megillah 18b}

Rabbi Muna said in the name of Rabbi Yehuda: even by intermittent reading, if he paused long enough to have finished it all {the megillah} he must return to the beginning.
And we conclude that the halacha is not like Rabbi Muna, but rather, even if he paused long enough to have finished it all, he fulfilled.
And by blowing the shofar as well, we say {in Rosh haShana}: Rabbi Yochanan said: if he heard 9 blasts at nine hours in the day, he fulfilled. And there is a brayta in accordance with him.

The Sages learnt {in a brayta}: If the scribe omitted letters or verses, and the reader read them like a meturgeman who inserts the Targum -- he fulfilled.
To explain: for the one who says the Targum {aloud in shul during the reading} adds matters in order to explicate the meaning of the verse, and thus he reads out these matters by heart; so too, this reader, if he read the verse or letters by heart he fulfilled.
And we object to this, for they learnt {in a brayta}: if there were letters blurred or ripped, if their form is identifiable, it is valid and if not, it is invalid.
And we answer that this is no problem. here was regarding all of them {that we need רשומן ניכר}; here was my a small portion of them {that reading by heart is allowed}.
