Rif Gittin 17a-b {Gittin 34a - b}

17a-b

{Gittin 34a}

Giddul bar Reilai sent a get to his wife. The agent went and found that she was sitting in the shade {or perhaps, at leisure? our gemara: weaving}. He said to her: Here is your get.
She said to him: Go away for now, and come tomorrow.
He went to him {to Giddul bar Reilai} and he opened his mouth and said Hatov vehaMeitiv {thanking Hashem for the good, for he now has a chance to change his mind}.
Abaye said: Blessed is HaTov veHaMeitiv, but the get is not canceled.
And Rava said: Blessed is HaTov veHaMeitiv and the get is canceled.
In what do they argue? In revealing of intention by get. Abaye holds that revealing of intention by get is not something, while Rava holds that revealing of intention by get is something of substance.
And the halacha is like Abaye.

{Gittin 34b}
Mishna:
ORIGINALLY THE HUSBAND WAS ALLOWED TO GIVE [IN THE GET] AN ADOPTED NAME OF HIMSELF OR OF HIS WIFE, OR AN ADOPTED TOWN OF HIMSELF OR OF HIS WIFE.
RABBAN GAMLIEL THE ELDER MADE A REGULATION THAT HE SHOULD WRITE, 'THE MAN SO-AND-SO OR BY WHAT EVER NAMES HE IS KNOWN,' THE WOMAN SO-AND-SO OR BY WHATEVER NAMES SHE IS KNOWN,' FOR THE BETTER ORDERING OF SOCIETY {=to prevent abuses}.

Gemara:
Rav Ashi said: And this is where he is established to have two names.

There was a woman who was called by most people Miriam and by a few people Sarah. The Nehardeans said {that in the get she should be referred to as}: "Miriam and every {other} name she has," and not "Sarah and every {other} name she has."
