Rif Beitza 20a {Beitza 36b; Yerushalmi Beitza 20b}

20a

"And they may place a vessel under the drip {of water} on Shabbat":
A tanna taught: And if the vessels becomes filled, he may pour it out and repeat, and not hold back.

{Beitza 36b}

The millhouse of Abaye was dripping with water {endangering the millstones}.
He came before Rabba.
He {=Rabba} said to him: Go, bring your bed to there, so that they {=the millstones} will be like a vessel used for excrement {which can then be taken out}, and then take them out.
He {=Abaye} said to him {our gemara has instead: Abaye sat and had a difficulty}: And do we make something into {a condition equal to} a vessel used for excrement initially?
In the meantime, Abaye's millstone collapsed.
He {=Abaye} said: This came upon me because I violated that which master {=Rabba} said.

Shmuel said: A vessel used for excrement and a vessel for urine, it is permitted to bring them out to the trash heap.
A brayta also says so: A vessel used for excrement and a vessel for urine, it is permitted to bring them out to the trash heap. And when he brings it back, he places within it water and brings it back.

And just as it is permitted to take out excrement via its vessel, so too it is permitted to take it out by itself.
For there was a mouse found in the spice room of Rav Ashi, and he said to them, "take it by its tail and take it out."
And it need not be stated that on Yom Tov it is permitted to move it, but even on Shabbat it is permitted, as we learned in kol kitvei kodesh {Shabbat 121b}: the halacha is that we may overturn a plate over a lamp, etc.

Mishna:

Anything which they are obligated because of shevut, because of reshut {voluntary obligation, yet the Sages prohibited it}, and because of mitzvah {command, yet the Sages prohibited it} on Shabbat, they are liable upon it on Yom Tov.
And these are they which are shevut: They may not climb a tree, nor ride on an animal, nor swim on the surface of the water, nor clap, slap thighs, or dance.
And these are they which are reshut: They do not judge, nor betroth, nor perform chalitza, nor perform levirate marriage.
These {our Mishna: And these} are they which are mitzvah: They may not consecrate, nor make assessment vows {donating the value of something} nor make a cherem {such that the object becomes Temple property} nor raise up terumot and maasarot. {our Mishna has singular teruma and maaser}
All of these were declared for Yom Tov, and all the more so for Shabbat; there is no difference between Yom Tov and Shabbat except for ochel nefesh {food needs}.

Gemara:
They may not climb a tree -- as a decree lest he separate {something from the tree}.
Nor may they ride on an animal -- as a decree lest he cut off a branch in order to direct it.
Nor may they swim on the surface of the water -- as a decree lest he make a tube of swimmers {a type of flotation device}.
Nor may they clap, dance, or slap thighs -- as a decree lest they fix a musical instrument.

Yerushalmi {Yerushalmi Beitza 20b}:
"Nor may they clap" -- this is clapping done in anger. As is written {Bemidbar 24:10}:

10 And Balak's anger was kindled against Balaam, and he smote his hands together; and Balak said unto Balaam: 'I called thee to curse mine enemies, and, behold, thou hast altogether blessed them these three times.
"Nor may they metapchin" {translated before as slap thighs, but it would seem instead that we should say here "clap" as well} -- this is done willfully.
Rabbi Yonah {an Amora} and the Sages --
The Sages say: Whether this way or that way {on back of hands or fronts} it is forbidden.
Rabbi Yonah said: On the back of their hands it is permitted.
For he said: In our days there were elders who clapped on the backs of their hands on Shabbat.

At the hilula {wedding feast?} of Rabbi Shimon son of Rabbi, they clapped with the backs of their hands on Shabbat.
Rabbi Meir passed by and heard their sounds, and said "our Rabbis have {apparently} permitted Shabbat!"
Rabbi heard his voice, and said, "who is this, who comes to rule over us within our own house?"
Rabbi Meir heard the voice of Rabbi, and fled.
His {Rabbi's} servants went out and ran after him.
A wind blew the headcloth off of the back of Rabbi Meir's neck.
Rabbi looked from a window and saw the back of Rabbi Meir's neck, from behind.
Rabbi said: I only merited Torah because I sw the back of Rabbi Meir's neck from behind.
