תנו רבנן מניקה שמת בעלה בתוך כ"ד חדש הרי זו לא תנשא ולא תתארס עד כ"ד חדש דברי ר"מ ר' יהודה מתיר בשמונה עשר חדש
וקי"ל בהא כר"מ
דרב ושמואל דאמרי תרוייהו צריכה להמתין כ"ד חדש חוץ מיום שנולד בו וחוץ מיום שנתארסה בו ואפילו נתנה בנה למניקה או גומלתו אסורה לינשא עד כ"ד חדש אבל אם מת מותר
מר בר רב אשי אמר אפילו מת נמי אסור דילמא קטלא ליה ואזלא ומינסבא
הוה עובדא וחנקתיה ולא היא ההיא שוטה הות דלא חנקי נשי לבניהם:

The Sages learnt {in a brayta}: A nursing mother whose husband died within the 24 months, she may not remarry or become betrothed
{Ketubot 60b}
until 24 months. These are the words of Rabbi Meir. Rabbi Yehuda permits at 18 months.

And we establish in this like Rabbi Meir. For Rav and Shmuel both say that she needs to wait 24 months excluding the day in which he was born and excluding the day she is betrothed thereon.

And even if she gives her son to a nurse or weans him, she is forbidden to remarry until 24 months. But if he {=the child} dies, she is permitted.
Mar bar Rav Ashi said: Even if he dies also she is forbidden, lest she kill him and go and remarry.
There was an incident in which a woman strangled her infant. And it is not so, for she was an imbecile, for women do not strangle their infants.

פסקה קימעא אוכלת הרבה מהיכא אמר רב ששת משלה:

The Sages learnt {in a brayta}: Behold if they gave her a child to nurse, she should not nurse with her her own son nor her friend's son. If she had made arrangements for little food, she must nonetheless eat a lot. And she should not eat with him bad things.

"If she had made arrangements for little food, she must nonetheless eat a lot" -- from where?
Rav Sheshet said: From her own.

ולא תאכל עמו דברים הרעים
כגון מאי אמר רב כהנא קישות וחזיז ואדמה
אביי אמר אפי' קרא וחבושא
רב פפא אמר אפילו קורא וכופרי
רב אשי אמר אפילו שמכי ושכרא והרסנא
מינייהו פסקי חלבא ומינייהו עכרי חלבא
פירוש שמכי בצלים גדולים:

"Nor should she eat with him bad things" -- such as what?
Rav Kahana said: Gourds, lichen, and earth.
Abaye said: Even pumpkin and quinces.
Rav Papa said: Even heart-of-palm and unripe dates.
Rav Ashi said: Even shimchei, and beer and and fish-hash.
Some of them cause the milk to stop and some of them cause the milk to become turbid.
To explain shimchei -- large onions.

{Ketubot 61a}

אמר רב הונא בדיק לן רב הונא בר חיננא היא אומרת להניק והוא אומר שלא להניק לה שומעין צערא דידה הוא הוא אומר להניק והיא אומרת שלא להניק מהו
ופשטנא ליה כל היכא דהיא לאו אורחה לה שמעינן
היא אורחה והוא לאו אורחיה מאי ופשטינא ליה עולה עמו ואינה יורדת עמו:

Rav Huna said: Rav Huna bar Chinena tested us: She says she wants to nurse and he says not to nurse, to her we listen for the suffering is hers. If he says to nurse and she says she does not wish to nurse, what?
And we resolve it that wherever it is not her custom, we listen to her. If is it her custom and not his custom, what? And we resolve it that she rises with him but does not descend with him.

הכניסה לו שפחה אחת
אמר רבי חנא ואיתימא רבי שמואל בר נחמני לא הכניסה לו ממש אלא כיון שראויה להכניס אע"פ שלא הכניסה
תנא אחד שהכניסה לו ואחד שמצאת לו משלו:

"If she brought in with her a single maidservant" --
Rabbi Chana, and some say Rabbi Shmuel bar Nachmani, said: Not that she necessarily actually brought with her anyone, but rather, since she was fit {=in a position} to bring, even if she did not bring.
A tanna taught: Whether she brought in to him or whether she found for him of his own {by saving up}.

ארבע יושבת בקתדרא
א"ר יצחק בר חנינא אמר רב הונא אע"פ שאמרו ארבע יושבת בקתדרא אבל מוזגת לו כוס ומצעת לו מטה ומרחצת לו פניו ידיו ורגליו ואמר ר' יצחק ברבי חנינא אמר רב הונא כל מלאכות שאשה עושה לבעלה נדה עושה לבעלה חוץ ממזיגת הכוס והצעת המטה והרחצת פניו [ידיו] ורגליו

"Four, she sits in her easy chair":
R' Yitzchak bar Chanina cited Rav Huna: Even though they said that "four, she sits in her easy chair," she nevertheless mixes for him the cup, makes his bed, and washes his face, hands and feet.
And R' Yitzchak beRabbi Chanina cited Rav Huna: All labor that a woman does for her husband, a menstruant does for her husband except for mixing the cup, making the bed, and washing his face, [hands] and feet.

והצעת המטה
אמר רבא לא אמרן אלא בפניו אבל שלא בפניו לית לן בה:

"And making the bed":
Rava said: They only said this in front of him, but not in front of him, we have no problem in it.

ומזיגת הכוס
דביתהו דשמואל מחלפא ליה מימינא לשמאלא דביתהו דאביי מנחא ליה אפומא דכובא דבי רבא אבי סדיא דבי רב פפא אשרשיפא

"And mixing the cup":
The wife of Shmuel switched from the left hand to the right hand. The wife of Abaye placed it on the edge of the wine cask. In the house of Rava {/the wife of Rava} on the side of the couch. In the house of Rav Papa on his foot-stool.
