the techumin suckle {=draw sustenance} from one another. That is to say, since the animals limbs draw sustenance from each other, it turns out that its techumin are as if mixed together, and so it bereira would not apply. And Shmuel said that even a cask if forbidden -- he holds that there is no such thing as bereira.
And we said: What became of this {issue}? Rabbi Yochanan said: There is no bereira. Rabbi Hoshaya said: There is bereira. {Beitza 38a} And we conclude {after some give and take in the gemara} that Rabbi Hoshaya, where he has bereira, is in Rabbinic matters {and techum is Rabbinic}, but by Biblical matters, he does not hold that there is bereira. And we decide the halacha explicitly like Rabbi Hoshaya who holds that in Rabbinic matters, there is bereira. And Rav and Rabbi Hoshaya hold one opinion, and Shmuel and Rabbi Yochanan hold one opinion, and since we establish about Rabbi Hoshaya that the halacha is in accordance with him together with Rav, we deduce that the halacha is in accordance with Rav.
Shmuel said: The ox of a fattener is like the legs of any man {who acquires it}, and of a shepherd is like the legs of all residents of that city.
{Beitza 37a} Mishna:
If one borrows a vessel from his fellow on erev Yom Tov, it is like the legs of the borrower. {If he borrows it} On Yom Tov, it is like the legs of the lender.
If a woman borrows from her friend spices, water, and salt for her dough, these are like the legs of both of them. And Rabbi Yehuda exempts by water, because it has no substance.
{Beitza 39a} The coal is like the legs of the owners, and the flame in any place {because it is intangible}.
The coal of hekdesh {donated to the Temple} one violates meila {forusing something belonging to hekdesh}, and the flame, one should not have benefit from it, but one does not violate meilah {for doing so}.
{The Rif apparently omits the end of this Mishna which makes similar coal/flame distinctions for carrying into a public domain.}
{Beitza 38a} Gemara:
"{If one borrowed} from erev Yom Tov, it is like the legs of the borrower": This is obvious! No, it is necessary, for the case in which he did not hand it over to him until it was Yom Tov. This supports Rabbi Yochanan, for Rabbi Yochanan said: If one borrows a vessel from his friend from erev Yom Tov and does not give it to him until it is Yom Tov, it is {still} like the legs of the borrower.
"On Yom Tov, like the legs of the lender": And even though he typically borrows from him, because he {the lender} says {to himself} perhaps he will find another {person} and borrow from him.
They may not judge, nor betroth, nor perform chalitza, nor perform levirate marriage -- and all of them as a decree lest he write.
They may not consecrate, nor make assessment vows, nor declare a cherem {with the object going to the Temple} -- as a decree because of purchasing and selling.
And they may not raise up terumot and maasarot -- and even to give them to a Kohen that day. And these words are where they were tevel from yesterday, but fruits that became tevel now, such as dough to separate from it challah, we separate and give it to a kohen.

Yerushalmi: And all of them which they did, whether accidentally, carelessly, or deliberately, whether misled, that which they did was done, on Shabbat and it need not be said, on Yom Tov. And we derive from this that one who violates and acquires on Shabbat of land or movable objects, his acquisition is an acquisition.

"And there is no difference between Shabbat and Yom Tov except for ochel nefesh": And we object to this: We may lower fruits via a skylight on Yom Tov but not on Shabbat! Rav Pappa said: This is no problem -- this is Bet Hillel and that {which states that Shabbat and Yom Tov are identical} is Bet Shammai. For we learnt {in a Mishna}: Bet Shammai say: We may not take out a minor, a lulav, or a sefer Torah into the public domain; And Bet Hillel permit.
Mishna:
An animal and vessels are like the legs of their owners {in terms of how far they can move in techum Shabbat}. If one hands over an animal to his son or to a shepherd, they are like his legs. {meaning the owner's legs; our Mishna has: like the legs of the owners. this difference might be significant, but seems not to be}. Vessels designated for one of the brothers in the house, they are like his legs, and those whicj are not designated, they are {restricted} to the place where they can all go {that is, the intersection rather than the union of the two areas}.
Gemara:
If one hands over the animal to his son or to a shepherd, etc. -- we establish this as with two shepherds, such that none of them acquires it, and therefore, it is like his {=the owner's} legs, but if he hands it over to a single shepherd, it is like the legs of the shepherd, and even if he only handed it over on Yom Tov, it is like the legs of the shepherd.
The Sages learnt {in a brayta}: If two {people} borrowed a single cloak -- this one goes with it in the morning to study hall and this to go in the evening to the synagogue, and this one made an eruv {techumin} to the North and that one made an eruv {techumin} to the South; this one who made an eruv to the North may travel to North as far as the legs of the one who made an eruv to the South, and this one who made an eruv to the South may travel to the South as far as the legs of the one who made his eruv to the North {such that permitted travel is the intersection of the two areas}. And if they made their eruvs in the exact center {such that there is nowhere to more}, he may not move from its spot.
To explain: Any person who establishes he Shabbat residence has 2000 cubits in each direction. And if he places his eruv 2000 cubits to the East {from his present position} he may travel until the place of his eruv 2000 cubits {to the East}, and these were the the 2000 cubits that exist for him to the West; when he placed his eruv at the end of 2000 cubits to the East, we move the 2000 cubits which he had in the West {from his present position} over to the East direction, and he is prohibited to travel to the West {from his present position} even a single cubit. And if he placed his eruv 1000 cubits to the East from the place of his Shabbat residence, it turns out that he moves 1000 cubits to the east direction, from the 2000 cubits that he had in the West direction, and he has left in the West 1000 cubits, and it turns out that he may travel to the East direction 3000 cubits and to the West direction 1000 cubits.
Now, if two people borrowed a single cloak, and one goes with it in the morning to the study hall to the East direction, and this one goes with it in the evening to the synagogue to the West direction, or if the study hall was in the North and the synagogue in the South, and the one who needs to go to the North places his eruv at the end of 1000 cubits to the North, he has 1000 cubits left in the South {from his present position} and he may not travel to the South except those 1000 cubits. And since this cloak acquires Shabbat residence like the legs of he who made his eruv to the North, even though his fellow who made his eruv at the end of 1000 cubits to the South may travel to the South 3000 cubits, he {=his fellow} has no permission to go with this cloak to the South farther than 1000 cubits, like the legs of the one who established his eruv to the North. And so too this one who made his eruv to the North, since his fellow made an eruv to the South at the end of 1000 cubits, and he {=his fellow} only has left to the North 1000 cubits, even though this one who made his eruv to the North may travel to the North 3000 cubits, he may not go with this cloak to the North outside 1000 cubits, which is like the legs of he who made his eruv to the South. And this is the explanation of "this one who made his eruv to the North may travel to the North as much as {=like the legs of} he who made his eruv to the South, and he who made his eruv to the South may travel to the South as much as {=like the legs of} he who made his eruv to the North.
And if they split the techum, this may not move from its spot -- That is to say: If each of the them placed their eruv at the end of 2000 cubits {to the North and South, respectively}, it comes out that he who made his eruv to the North may not travel {by himself} to the South even one cubit, and the one who established his eruv to the South may not travel to the North even one cubit. And since the cloak acquires Shabbat residence like the intersection of the legs of each of them, he may not move it from its spot.

And Shmuel said: Even the cask is forbidden. Rav said the cask is permitted, because he holds that there is bereira {such that what he eventually will take for himself takes effect now}.
{If fruits were placed on a roof and now people fear that it will rain} They may lower fruits via a skylight on Yom Tov but not on Shabbat. And we may cover the fruits with keilim {vessels/clothing} because of the dripping water. And so too pitchers of wine and pitchers of water. And we may place a kli {vessel} under the dripping water on Shabbat.
"They may lower fruits via a skylight." Rav Nachman said: They only learnt this regarding the same roof, but from roof to roof, no.
A tanna taught: He may not remove it from one roof to another, even if their roofs are on the same level. A tanna taught: He should not lower them with a rope through windows, nor should he lower them via ladders.
ומכסין את הפירות וכו': אמר עולא אפילו אוירא דליבני ורבי יצחק אמר פירות הראויין ואזדא רבי יצחק לטעמיה דאמר רבי יצחק אין כלי ניטל אלא לדבר הניטל בשבת וכבר ביררנו במסכת שבת שאין הלכה כרבי יצחק "And they may cover the fruits...": Ulla said: Even rows of bricks {may be covered}. And Rabbi Yitzchak said: Fruits which are suitable {to be used on Yom Tov}. And Rabbi Yitzchak is consistent in his opinion, for Rabbi Yitchak said: A vessel may not be moved except for the needs of something which may be moved on Shabbat. And we have already explained in masechet Shabbat that the halacha is not like Rabbi Yitzchak. 20a

The millhouse of Abaye was dripping with water {endangering the millstones}. He came before Rabba. He {=Rabba} said to him: Go, bring your bed to there, so that they {=the millstones} will be like a vessel used for excrement {which can then be taken out}, and then take them out. He {=Abaye} said to him {our gemara has instead: Abaye sat and had a difficulty}: And do we make something into {a condition equal to} a vessel used for excrement initially? In the meantime, Abaye's millstone collapsed. He {=Abaye} said: This came upon me because I violated that which master {=Rabba} said.

Rabbi Yonah {an Amora} and the Sages -- The Sages say: Whether this way or that way {on back of hands or fronts} it is forbidden. Rabbi Yonah said: On the back of their hands it is permitted. For he said: In our days there were elders who clapped on the backs of their hands on Shabbat.
At the hilula {wedding feast} of Rabbi Shimon son of Rabbi, they clapped with the backs of their hands on Shabbat. Rabbi Meir passed by and heard their sounds, and said "our Rabbis have {apparently} permitted Shabbat!" Rabbi heard his voice, and said, "who is this, who comes to rule over us within our own house?" Rabbi Meir heard the voice of Rabbi, and fled. His {Rabbi's} servants went out and ran after him. A wind blew the headcloth off of the back of Rabbi Meir's neck. Rabbi looked from a window and saw the back of Rabbi Meir's neck, from behind. Rabbi said: I only merited Torah because I saw the back of Rabbi Meir's neck from behind.

At the hilula {wedding feast?} of Rabbi Shimon son of Rabbi, they clapped with the backs of their hands on Shabbat. Rabbi said: I only merited Torah because I sw the back of Rabbi Meir's neck from behind.

A tanna taught: He may not remove it from one roof to another, even if their roofs are on the same level. A tanna taught: He should not lower them with a rope through windows, nor should he lower them via ladders.

"And they may cover the fruits...": Ulla said: Even rows of bricks {may be covered}.

And so too a pot, and so too eggs, and so too a bed, and so too barrels. To explain: When he makes a bonfire, he should not place the wood underneath and place others upon them above, because then it comes out the way of construction, but rather he should grab onto the wood above and place another one under it, for this is not the way of construction. And so too a pot, when he places it, he should not place the stones first and then put the pot on top of them, because it comes out like making a tent, but rather he should grab the pot in his hand and place stones underneath it. And so too eggs, when he wishes to roast them, he should grab the top one and place another one under it. And so too a bed, he should grab the boards at first and place the feet under them. And so too a barrel, when he wishes to incline it on stones, he should incline it and afterwards enter stones underneath it.

On what do they argue? About that which is scattered in a karpaf and on that which is gathered in the field; that Bet Shammai say he should not bring it and Bet Hillel say he may bring it.

What is a karpaf {enclosure}? Whatever is close to the city, etc. It was a question to them: Was Rabbi Yossi being lenient? That Rabbi Yehuda said that whatever adjoins the city, and this is where there is a key {to enter it}, and Rabbi Yossi comes to say that since it has a key, even within the techum also? Or perhaps he was saying to be stringent? That Rabbi Yehuda said: What is a karpaf {enclosure}? Whatever adjoins the city, whether it has a key or does not have a key, and Rabbi Yossi comes to say that specifically where it has a key, but if it does not have a key, even close to the city also no. And we resolve that Rabbi Yossi is saying leniently, and the halacha is like him.
Mishna:
They do not chop wood from beams or from a beam which broke on Yom Yov, nor may they chop with an axe, a saw or a sickle, but {only} with a cleaver {of a butcher}.
{Beitza 31b} A closed {our Mishna lacks the word סתום} house which is full of fruits which became breached, he may take from the place of the breach. Rabbi Meir said: He may even breach it initially and take.
Gemara:
But the reisha {beginning of the Mishna} said that one should not chop at all! Rav Yehuda cited Shmuel: The text is deficient and this is what it means to say: "They may not chop from beams, nor from a beam which broke on Yom Tov, but from a beam which broke from erev Yom Tov they may chop. And when they chop, they may not chop they with an axe, a saw or a sickle, but {only} with a cleaver. A brayta also says so: They may not chop from the stack of beams nor from a beam which broke on Yom Tov because it is not "prepared."
"Nor with an axe": Rav Chinena bar Shelemia cited Rav: They only learned this about it female portion, but its male portion, it is permitted. Some learn this on the seifa: "but rather {only} with a cleaver": Rav Chinena bar Shelemia said: They only learned this by the male portion, but with its female portion, it is forbidde, To explain: its female portion is the wide side {of the cleaver or the axe}, and the narrow side is the male portion.
"A closed house full of fruits...": Shmuel said: The {knots of rope} fasteners in the ground, one may untie, but he may not unravel {the rope} not cut it, and in vessels, he may untie, unravel, or cut, whether on Shabbat or Yom Tov.
Rav Chinena bar Shelemia cited Rav: to remove the darkness {=the charcoal residue on top that darkens the light}.
Bar Kappara taught {a brayta}: There are six things said regarding a wick -- three stringent and three lenient. We may not twist it initially on Yom Tov, and we may not singe it with flame, and we may not cut in into two. The three lenient: he may press it together by hand, and he may soak it in out, and he may cut it with a flame {when its ends are} in two lamps.
Mishna:
We may not break a shard {of pottery}, nor may we cut paper to roast salted fish in it. And we may not shovel out an oven or a stove, but we may press down {the ashes to level it}.
And we may not position two barrels together in order to set a pot upon them. And we may not support a pot with a piece of wood, and also a door . And we may not direct an animal with a staff on Yom Tov.
Gemara:
"And we may not shovel out an oven or a stove...": Rabbi Chiyya son of Rav Yosef taught before Rabbi Yochanan: And if it is impossible to bake unless he shovels it out it is permitted.
The wife of Rabbi Chiyya had a {half-}brick fall into the oven on Yom Tov. Rabbi Chiyya said to her: See that I desire a good loaf from you. {thus, you may shovel it out}
Rava said to his attendant: Roast a goose for me and be careful not to singe it. {thus, shovel out the oven} Ravina said to Rav Ashi: Rav Acha of Hutzal said to us that Master {=Rav Ashi} had mud spread over his oven on Yom Tov {to assist it; and this should be forbidden, because of the labor involved}. He {=Rav Ashi said to him: We rely on the banks of the Euphrates. That is to say: we do not knead clay on Yom Tov, but rather we rely on the banks of the Euphrates, and this is the clay and mud on the sides of the river. Rava said: And this was where they marked it off from yesterday. Ravina said: And ashes is permitted. {Rif:} because the ashes are not subject to kneading {well}, therefore it is permitted to knead it on Yom Tov to spread upon the oven for bread of for roasting.
Rav Nachman said: Stones of a privy it is permitted to align {to sit upon} on Yom Tov. For the Torah prohibited permanent construction, and a temporary construction the Torah did not prohibit, and the Sages decreed upon a temporary construction because of a permanent construction, and here, because of his honor, the Sages did not decree.
Rav Yehuda said: A bonfire, from top down it is permitted, but bottom up is forbidden.
{Beitza 33a}
And so too a pot, and so too eggs, and so too a bed, and so too barrels.
"We do not support the pot with a piece of wood, and so too with a door": {We do not support} with a door, do you thing? Rather, say: And so too a door {we do not support}.
If one brings pitchers of wine from place to place {on Yom Tov}, he should not bring them in a basket or a box, but should bring them on his shoulder or before him {in hand}. And who brings grain, he should not lower the box behind him {on his back} but should bring it in his hand or before himself {our gemara lacks "or before himself"}. {Beitza 30a} And we may begin with a stack of straw {as fuel} but not with wood which is in the muktzeh {the backyard}.
Gemara:
