Rif Gittin 9b {19a - b}

9b

{Gittin 19a continues}

And these words {that witnesses who do not know how to sign can use a stencil} is by gittin {bills of divorce} but by other deeds, no.
There was an incident in terms of other deeds, and Rav Kahana flogged the man.

{Gittin 19b}
There is a brayta in accordance with Rav: Witnesses who do not know how to sign, we tear for them in the paper and they fill the incisions with ink. And those who do not know how to read, we read before them and they sign.
Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel said: When are these words said? In regard to bills of divorce. But by freeing of slaves, or any other legal document, if they know how to read and sign, they may sign, but if not, they may not sign.
Rabbi Eleazar said: What is the reason of Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel? So that Israelite daughters should not be chained.

Rava said: The halacha is like Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel.
Rav Nachman had the scribes of the court judges read before him the document and then he signed.
And this is specifically by Rav Nachman, and specifically the scribes of the court judges, for they were afraid of him.
{Soncino notes: R. Nahman was himself the chief judge in Nehardea, having been appointed by the Exilarch, who was his father-in-law.}
But Rav Nachman with other scribes, or alternatively, scribes of the court judges for another man, no.

Rav Pappa, when he had before him a Persian document drawn up in a heathen registry, he used to give it to two heathens to read, one without the other, where they acted in all innocence {=without telling them what it was for}, and he would collect with it from mortgaged property. (Another variant: From free property.)
R' Assi {our gemara: Rav Ashi} said: Huna bar Natan told me that Amemar said: This Persian document, upon which were signed two Israelites, we may collect with it from mortgaged property {=under a lien}.
But they {=the Israelite signers} did not know how to read it {for it was in Persian}!
The case was where they did know.
But we need a writing which is not able to be forged, and this is not!
Where it was treated with gall-nut water.
But we need to return upon the topic of the document on the last line, and this lacks this!
Where they returned {to the topic on the last line}.

And this informs us that in any language, it is valid, whether for bills of divorce of by regular legal documents.

Ravina said: Amemar said to me: So did Mereimar say in the name of Rav Dimi of Nehardea: The two people before whom the get is delivered must read it.
And this that we learnt {in a brayta}: "Behold, this is your get" and then she took it and threw it into the sea, or into a flame, or to anything which destroyed it, and then he retracted and said that
