Rif Moed Katan 17b {Moed Katan 27a; 28b; Megillah 23b; Moed Katan 24a - b; 27b}

17b

{Moed Katan 27a}
Mishna:

They do not place the bier in the street {during chol haMoed -- Rashi and Nimukei Yosef have that girsa explicitly} because it makes the eulogy more common, and not of women ever, because of the honor {for the dead, that she is pouring blood, or for the women who are alive. See Nimukei Yosef}.

{Moed Katan 28b}
Women on the Moed may lament {saying lamentations in unison} but may not beat their chests.
Rabbi Yishmael says: Those close to the bier may beat their chests.

On Rosh Chodesh, on Chanukka, and Purim they may lament and beat their chests.
On both this {Moed} and that {Rosh Chodesh et al} they may not bewail {where one leads and the others respond in their lamentations}

Once the corpse is buried, they do not lament and they do not beat their chests.

What is the definition of lament? That all of them say at once.
Bewailing? One says and all say {/answer} after her.
For it is stated {Yirmeyahu 9:19}:
19 Yea, hear the word of the LORD, O ye women, and let your ear receive the word of His mouth, and teach your daughters wailing, and every one her neighbour lamentation:
But in the future to come, what does it say? {Yeshaya 25:8}:
ח בִּלַּע הַמָּוֶת לָנֶצַח, וּמָחָה אֲדֹנָי ה דִּמְעָה מֵעַל כָּל-פָּנִים; וְחֶרְפַּת עַמּוֹ, יָסִיר מֵעַל כָּל-הָאָרֶץ--כִּי , דִּבֵּר. {פ} 8 He will swallow up death for ever; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the reproach of His people will He take away from off all the earth; for the LORD hath spoken it. {P}
Gemara:
We learn in perek haMocher Peirot lechaveiro: {Bava Batra 100b}
The Sages learnt {in a brayta}: They do not reduce from seven standings and sittings for a dead person, corresponding to {Kohelet 1:2}:
2 Vanity of vanities, saith Koheleth; vanity of vanities, all is vanity.

Rav Acha son of Rava said to Rav Ashi: How should I act?
He said to him: like that which they learnt {in a brayta}: Rabbi Yehuda said: At first, they did not have less than seven standings and sittings for the dead - such as "Stand, honored ones, stand," and "sit, honored ones, sit." They said to him: Even on Shabbat it is permitted to do so.

The sister of Rami bar Pappa was married to Rav Avya. She died, and he made for her a standing and sitting.
Rav Yosef said: He erred in two matters. He erred in that they should only do it with relatives {who are not mourners} and he did it even using non-relatives. And he erred in that they only do this on the first day and he did it on the second day.
Abaye said: In this he also erred. That they only do it in the cemetery and he did it even in the city.
And Rava said: Even in this he also erred - that they only do this in the place where they have the custom to do so, and there they did not have this custom.

We learn in Megillah {23b}:
"Nor do they make a Maamad and Moshav with less than ten"
:
What is the reason? Since they need to say "arise, honored ones, arise," "sit, honored ones, sit." With less than ten, it is not the way of the land {normal practice}.

{Moed Katan 24a}
The Sages learnt {in a brayta}: For the first thirty days {from when the child is born, if it dies}, it goes out in someone's bosom {carried in the arms} and is buried by one woman and two men {because of issues of yichud}, but not by one man and two women.
Abba Shaul says: Even by one man and two women.
{Moed Katan 24b}
And they do not form a row for them, nor say upon them either the blessing of mourners or the comforting of mourners.
A child past thirty days goes out on a coffin.
Rabbi Yehuda says: Not with a coffin carried on the shoulder, but with a coffin carried on the arms.
And they form a row for it, and say upon it either the blessing of mourners and the comforting of mourners.

A child who is 12 months old {and on} goes out in a bier.
Rabbi Akiva says: A one year old whose limbs are {developed} like a two year old, or a two year old whose limbs are {only developed} like a one-year old {thus, either age or development of two years old}, goes out in a bier.
Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel says: When one goes out in a bier, the public grieves for him, and when one does not go out in a bier, the public does not grieve for him.
Rabbi Eleazar ben Azarya says: If he {the child} is known to the public, the public engage for him, and if he is not known to the public, the public do not engage for him.
And what is that? In eulogy.
Rabbi Meir said in the name of Rabbi Yishmael: Poor people {to get a eulogy}, three years old; Rich people, five years old.
Rabbi Yehuda said in his name: Poor people {to get a eulogy}, five years old; Rich people, six years old.
The children on the aged are like the children of poor people.

Rav Gidel bar Menashe cited Shmuel: The halacha is like Rabbi Yehuda who said in the name of Rabbi Yishmael.

{Moed Katan 27b}

Rabba bar Rav Huna said: chol haMoed does not stand in the way of {eulogizing for} Torah scholars, and certainly not Chanukka and Purim.
And these words are in his presence, but not in his presence, no.
Rav Pappa said: And the day of hearing the report is like "in his presence."

Rabbi Yochanan said: A mourner, once he shakes {/nods} his head {showing he is consoled}, comforters are not allowed to sit by him.
Rabbi Yochanan said: All are obligated to stand before the Nasi except for the mourner and the sick person.
Rabbi Yochanan said: To everyone one may say "sit," except to a mourner of sick person, because it carries the additional implication of "stay" in mourning or "stay" in your illness.
