אמר רבא אתתא שריא דאי איתא דעביד איסורא הוי ניחא ליה לנואף דליכול האי גברא ולימות
דכתיב כי נאפו ודם בידיהן
פשיטא
מהו דתימא איסורא הוי והא דלא שבקיה נואף למיכל משום דניחא ליה לנואף דלא לימות בעל ותהא אנתתיה מזנה עלויה משום
דכתיב מים גנובים ימתקו קמ"ל

Rava said: The wife is permitted, for if it were so that he was doing a prohibition, it would have been better for the adulterrer that the husband eat and die. For it is written {Yechezkel 23:37}

לז כִּי נִאֵפוּ, וְדָם בִּידֵיהֶן, וְאֶת-גִּלּוּלֵיהֶן, נִאֵפוּ; וְגַם אֶת-בְּנֵיהֶן אֲשֶׁר יָלְדוּ-לִי, הֶעֱבִירוּ לָהֶם לְאָכְלָה. 37 For they have committed adultery, and blood is in their hands, and with their idols have they committed adultery; and their sons, whom they bore unto Me, they have also set apart unto them to be devoured.
This is obvious! {No.} I would have thought that there was indeed a violation, and this that the adulterer did not leave him to eat was because it is better for the adulterer that the husband not die, such that his wife be cheating with him {this word מזנה is missing from our text of gemara, but is in Rif}, because it is written {Proverbs 9:17}
יז מַיִם-גְּנוּבִים יִמְתָּקוּ; וְלֶחֶם סְתָרִים יִנְעָם. 17 'Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.'
Therefore he informs us.

הדרן עלך ואלו נדרים וסליקא לה מסכת נדרים
