even if it [the stove] is neither swept nor covered with ashes, and the Mishna is according to the opinion of Chanania? or perhaps this "ONE MAY NOT PLACE" means even keeping [it there] {from erev Shabbat}, and if it is swept or covered with ashes, yes {it is permitted}, and if not, no, and this argues on Chanania's opinion?
And we ask and answer, and we conclude that "ONE MAY NOT PLACE" means one may not keep it there {from erev Shabbat}, and thus even keeping it there, if it is swept or covered with ashes, yes {it is permitted}, and if not, no, and certainly this is so in terms of returning it {to the stove}.
And it is logical to us that this is the conclusion, for after they ask and answer regarding it, they consider the question {Shabbat 37a} "May one lean [a pot] against it? {Do we say} on the inside and top thereof it is forbidden, but leaning against it may be permitted; or perhaps, there is no difference?" And from the fact that we say "on the inside and top thereof it is forbidden," we may deduce that it is forbidden to keep {from erev Shabbat} on a {double-}stove which is not swept or covered.
And further, we deal with our question: "What is our decision thereon? — Come and hear: If a stove is heated with peat or wood, one may lean [a pot] against it, but must not keep [it there] unless it is swept or covered with ashes. If the coals have died down, or thoroughly beaten flax is placed upon it, it is as though covered with ashes." It is then clear that so is the halacha {with regard to keeping from erev Shabbat}.

And furthermore, this that we say later
{on the next Mishna, on daf 38b} regarding AN OVEN THAT WAS HEATED WITH STUBBLE OR RAKINGS, {and it continues ONE MUST NOT PLACE [A POT, ETC.,] EITHER INSIDE OR ON TOP},It is clear that so is the halacha, that a double-stove which is not swept or covered with ashes, on top is forbidden.
Rav Yosef thought to say that INSIDE means actually inside, and ON TOP means actually on top, but as for leaning [a pot against it], that is well.
And Abaye objected to him {from the continuation of the Mishna}: "IF A KUPPAH {=small stove or brazier} WAS HEATED WITH STUBBLE OR RAKINGS, IT IS LIKE A DOUBLE STOVE; WITH PEAT OR TIMBER, IT IS LIKE AN OVEN" - IT IS LIKE AN OVEN - that it is forbidden, but in a double stove, it is permitted.
To what is the reference: Shall we say, on its top?
Then under what circumstance? Shall we say that it is not swept or covered with ashes?
But {even} a double-stove, which is not swept or covered with ashes, who permits?
